With due apologies to the Darwinists I would like to confess that I have believed in the existence of a creator(GOD) right from the time I have been able to reason things out for myself. I do not believe that we are here by chance and that we are the only intelligent (debatable) beings in the entire universe ……as the scientists would have us believe till some time back.
The proof that we are inhabiting this planet by design and not by chance dawned on me in the most unlikely settings…. over Chicken Biryani and two large pegs of Royal Stag, though the stage for this revelation was set earlier in the evening.
My daughter and I watched this fascinating program on solar eclipses on one of the channels. We watched the moon slowly slide across the face of the sun and it was like dusk at mid afternoon. The scene was too eerie to watch even on TV. Then after a lapse of a few minutes, suddenly from no where a diamond appeared on the right hand top corner of the image and it looked like a massive ring of fire. It is one of the most spectacular sights we had ever seen and we sat in complete silence literally dumb struck by the beauty of the event.
Later that evening while I was enjoying my whiskey, my daughter walked up to me and started discussing the program. She was fascinated by the show and wanted to now if the moon and the Sun were the same size. No I explained, the moon is 1/6 the size of the earth while the sun is a few thousands of times bigger than the earth. They look similar in size because the sun is very far away. Once the concept of distance and size was mastered she was in free flow and the conversation went some thing like this.
“You mean to say if the sun was bigger or smaller than what it is we would not have a total eclipse?
“Absolutely”.
And what if the moon was bigger or smaller than it is?
No total eclipse again. It would either hide the sun completely or appear like a sun spot.
Any other reason why we would miss the sight we saw today on TV?
If the sun was closer to the earth or further away.
If the moon was closer to the earth or further away we would still not see a total eclipse.
You mean to say that so many things have to be just right for a total eclipse to happen?
That is not all. The sun and the moon could have chosen parallel paths and we would not have seen an eclipse of any nature.
Our solar system has eight planets, do any of them experience a total eclipse?
No, though some other planets have a more than one moon, 18 in case of Jupiter but they still do not witness the sight we saw today.
Isn’t it funny that the only planet in the solar system that has intelligent life should also witness this spectacular sight?
Come to think of it yes, and the beauty is it will be visible only for a few million years more as the moon is gradually moving away from the earth. This is the only time in the history of the solar system that a total eclipse will be visible from earth.
In a few million years people will not believe that something so beautiful existed.
Maybe there will be no intelligent life on earth in a few million years to notice to know the difference.
When and how was the moon formed?
4 Billion years ago when the earth was still young a meteorite hit earth and 1/6 of it,s mass was scooped out. That is what we see as the moon today
And positioned it at the exact distance from the earth so that it causes a total eclipse. Isn’t that really weird?
There is one more feature about the moon that may surprise you. The moon takes exactly the same amount of time to rotate and revolve around the earth. If the earth was to do the same, one earth day and one earth year would be 364 ¼ current days. Astronauts are the only people lucky enough to have seen the other side of the moon, which the rest of us haven’t.
Isn’t it too much of a coincidence, that 1/6 of the earth breaks off in a freak accident, travels the exact distance between the earth and the sun and follow a path similar to the sun to cause a total eclipse, and this happens to the only planet that has intelligent life. What are the odds of all these things happening by chance?
I am no mathematician but I can safely say a few zillion: 1.
And what are the chances of this happening if it was done on purpose by design?
1:1,
Are you saying a total eclipse is a clue from God?
"Dad I think it is his signature."
